It is with great heartache and sadness that we announce the passing of Steven Taylor, who was sadly taken from us too soon, after a short battle with Glioblastoma, Brain Tumours.

He died peacefully at home surrounded by the love of his wife, his children and his loyal dog, on 10th October 2025, aged 55.

He was a very devoted Husband, Dad, Grandad, Son and Son in law and will be dearly missed by all that knew and loved him, especially his family and friends.

Our hearts are broken and we will miss him more than words can say.

Anyone who knew this wonderful human is more than welcome to attend his funeral and wake.

We are hoping to make the day as fun and lovely as he was.

His funeral will take place at Huntingdon Crematorium on Wednesday 10th September at 2:30pm.

The Wake will be at St Neots Rugby Club from at 3:30pm onwards.

Welcome Back!

So, as you can see, our lives had now taken us down a very unexpected road where funerals played a very big part. Over the years, we have visited many funeral Directors.

From large multimillion-pound businesses with too many offices to count. To small, independent companies with equipment that looks like it has come out of the 1800s. Probably being passed down from father to son for many generations.

There always seems to be a thick layer of dust on everything in these offices, including them, and they insist on giving you a cheque every time! Funeral Directors have a very important job, and many traditions go hand in hand with the vocation.

Although some of our older gentleman Funeral Directors can be a little stuck in their ways, I feel the fax machine needs to be let go of now. Every Funeral Director does things a little differently, and when visiting our now many customers with our horses, I began to realise that not everyone was as invested as they should be. To some, not all I hasten to add, but more than felt comfortable, this is just a job.

This industry is not for everyone, but those who enter into it, need to care, and I mean REALLY CARE. About seven years ago, while sitting aboard one of our carriages outside one of these larger funeral directors' offices, while patiently waiting for them to bring out the coffin and place it in our hearse.

I found myself watching the goings on inside, with them blissfully unaware, I was even there. I concluded that they were just going through the motions. To them, this was just another day, and they were dealing with a wooden box, not thinking about the precious cargo that was stored within.

I understand that as such a big company many families must come to them daily in need of their services. But even so, in my opinion, every family is an individual and should be treated as such. A grieving family doesn’t care that the funeral arranger has seen 4 families already that day.

This is NOT just a job!

And nor should they.

They have just lost someone so dear to them, and this is quite possibly the worst time of their lives. They need you to care about them, show empathy, and understand their feelings. They need you to help and guide them through this time with dignity and grace.

You need to be there for them, and they need to feel like you are there for them, without question. Grief takes on so many faces and we all grieve differently. As a Funeral Director and Arranger, you must understand this, and gently guide families through it.

On my way home that evening I called my Mum and told her my feelings. She told me, “Lisa, you could do this, and you could do it well”. She had literally said what I was thinking. There must be a better way to help families when they need us most.

I was already so proud of our small part in helping people in their time of need, but I knew I was meant for more. I wanted to be there for people from the very first phone call. We all deserve respect and that doesn’t stop when we pass. People need as much care, respect, and dignity, if not more, as when they were alive.

They have still lived a life and have a story to tell.

They are still loved and deserve the very best care while they are with the Funeral Director. I put my thinking cap on and spent the next two years watching and learning from other trusted Funeral Directors. In those two years I really did discover there are good, bad and some utterly ridiculous companies out there.

I think the best advice I can give as with any service provider. Before instructing a Funeral Director, ALWAYS DO YOUR HOMEWORK. During this time my mum was sadly diagnosed with Lymphoma Cancer. It didn’t dampen her spirits, and she was the foundation and driving force behind me when setting up Regency Funeral Directors.

She has always been a stickler for grammar and punctuation. Mum proofread any leaflet or brochure before it went to print. Many of her words are still on my website as she helped me write and rewrite the document I still use today.

Sadly, we lost Mum last year, after a 6-year battle with Cancer. She held on as long as she could as she so wanted to see our welcoming little office open its doors. We lost Mum just weeks before this happened, although I feel her with me in everything I do. I know she is so very proud of me and my lovely family.

I cared for Mum, bringing her home to us, back to our smallholding in Easton where we have our mortuary.

One of the first things we decided to do when setting up our funeral directors was to have our mortuary at home so that people would never be alone. Most companies have their Mortuary and Chapel facilities behind their office.

This is not something I wanted to do.

But that was no thanks to her. When she was first diagnosed with cancer, she came up with a brilliant idea of creating a booklet called My Funeral Wishes .

It's just a little notebook with prompts to write down the ideas you have or wish to have carried out at your funeral. You keep it safe, and when the time comes, your family knows exactly what you would like. Mum didn’t want to die; she didn’t want to leave us. She didn’t feel like it was her time yet. So, she really struggled to talk about anything regarding her funeral.

We found these little booklets all dotted around her house when she did pass. Sadly, she didn’t follow her own advice and none of these booklets were completed. Luckily, I had so many conversations with her when setting up Regency that I knew how to make her send off as individual as she was.

She loved her wicker baskets and some of them now adorn our office. So, it was definitely going to be a wicker coffin for her. Her garden was her pride and joy, and springtime was her favourite time of year.

So, with the help of Andrea at Kimbolton Flowers, who is our florist of choice, we created a spring garden with delicate flowers woven into her coffin with her favourite colour, blue ribbon. Her order of service had a watermark running through each page, showing her stunning garden in all its glory.

I chose one of our fantastic celebrants, who I knew would create a service that conjured up a picture of who she was and how she lived and loved her family fiercely. Of course, she had to arrive in a white horse-drawn carriage, pulled by two of our stunning greys and driven by her granddaughter Eleanor.

My Father rode up next to Ellie, never leaving mum's side.

My mum had a funeral that was as individual as she was.

Why am I telling you this?

This is not a JOB, this is a VOCATION, a CALLING, this is an HONOUR.

I couldn’t face the idea of leaving someone alone at night, locking up, and walking away. Many Funeral Directors like ours, are on a high street, with people walking past and busy cars driving by. I didn’t want families to have to come and spend their last moments with their loved ones with what could quite possibly, be a Subway on one side of the office and a Nail Bar on the other.

No, we needed to do it better. When a loved one comes to us, they are cared for as a family member. I look after everyone as I did my own mum. With all the care, dignity and respect they deserve. Our private chapel, where families can come and spend their last moments together, is a peaceful place with no cars or people walking past.

Just open fields and countryside views.

There is no time limit, and the space is comfortable and welcoming. Our little funeral directors is completely family-run. You will only ever get Eleanor or myself to answer the phone when you call. We are there for you and your loved one from the very start.

Starting a new business for anyone is hard, to say the least. However, for me, I knew that was what I had to do. I could never have dreamed, though, that all those years ago, as a mother of three young children, I would end up here. Being the owner of two amazing businesses and helping families in need.

I must admit that opening Regency Funeral Directors has, up to this point in my life, been the hardest thing I have ever done. I knew what I wanted to achieve, and how I wanted to be different from other companies. But I could have never imagined being met with distance, disdain, and such an unwelcoming air as I did when we opened our lovely little office.

I know you shouldn’t take things to heart, but some of the comments and whispers made when we opened our warm little office really cut deep. My whole aim has been to create a warm environment where people feel safe and cared for in their time of need. You do not have to walk into a cold, unwelcoming office environment, where you are met with a disinterested staff member, who you never quite managed to get the name of.

I wanted people to form a bond with us and feel completely comfortable with us. I need families to know their loved ones are safe and cared for while with us. They come into our home and are never alone. Time has helped, and I feel people are now less shocked and horrified as they pass my door. We have helped many families, and we hope to be able to help many more over the years.

Death is a very hard subject to talk about. We all want to live forever and hate thinking about our own mortality. But it is a subject we should be talking about because we are all going to die at one time or another, and we need our loved ones to know what we would like to happen to us when the time comes.

Well, the care and attention that we put into my beautiful mum's funeral, is the exact same care and attention I put into every funeral that I organise.

Every person who comes to us is cared for with as much grace and dignity as she was. Every family I look after is truly understood and their needs are cared for as individuals. No two funerals are the same.

Our funeral deserves to be as individual as we are. Whether we want it to be simple and fuss-free, or a true celebration of life, with all the bells and whistles. I am here for everyone who walks through our door.

Welcome Back!

These days, Eleanor and Dean are our main carriage drivers, driving pairs and teams of horses with ease.

Dean even drives six in hand which is no mean fete. Only a handful of people in the country can do that. As for me, I am generally behind the scenes moving lorries and doing mountains of paperwork. But I still get wheeled out occasionally and take our stunning horses' reins.

The feeling of pride in what we do and who we have become swells my heart. My two wonderful now grown-up boys can also be seen helping. Donning livery coats and grooming when needed between college and university studies.

Another career-defining moment for me was a call I received early one morning in late spring. The gentleman introduced himself as Boyd Excel and then paused as if I should know who he was. I had never heard of him, and my reply was polite but not what he was expecting. I think he expected me to draw breath and act like a teenager who was seeing her pop idle in the flesh for the first time.

“I wonder if I can call on your services”, he said.

“Yes, of course”, I replied, “how can we help you”.

“I need to hire a team of horses for Royal Ascot,” he said. “I have some sponsors I would like to entertain, and I need a good team of horses to pull my Park Drag Coach. We will be going into the Royal Enclosure”.

“Oh, ok,”, I said, thinking, isn’t that the queen's horses that do all that posh stuff?

He soon realised I had absolutely no idea what he wanted or who he was. So, after a long conversation, he explained that he was a seven-time World Champion in Carriage Driving Trials.

This didn’t happen, so he pressed on.

And he WAS actually pretty famous, oops!

We agreed to help him and were given our instructions. It turned out he actually wanted to hire our horses for three days, and he said he would organise everything. The plan was to pack everything up in our lorry and travel to Windsor the day before we were first needed. He had arranged for us to stay and keep our horses at Combermere Barracks, with the army horses. We would also be setting off from there each day.

We had a caravan so it was arranged for us to take that and park it in the stable yard at Combermere, so we could be close to the horses. Being an army barracks with high security, everyone who was coming with us to help and groom had to be vetted and go through rigorous checks. Even the horse’s passports had to be checked and vaccinations updated.

Boyd was going to send us a set of his own harness to fit to our horses and he wanted us to clean the brass until it shone. In theory, this sounded fine. In reality, it was really hard work and not for the faint-hearted.

It took weeks to polish every buckle and black every strap. It ended up being a real team effort and often went late into the night. We also had to think about the horses we were leaving behind. They still needed to be cared for.

So, with everything eventually in place, and a lorry loaded with horses, feed, rugs, buckets, and much more. We set off for Windsor. I followed behind with our little caravan packed full of everything we would need for the three days. When we arrived at the gates of Combermere Barracks, a soldier with a gun came out to meet us. It was a little unnerving, but he waved us in and asked us to park and sign ourselves in.

Once this was done, we were shown to the yard and where we would be staying. Our first priority was unloading the horses and settling them in their stalls. Hay, Water, Feed, and a nice warm rug. They were settled and relaxed, which helped us relax a bit ourselves.

The next was to set out all the harness we had spent weeks cleaning and ensure it was still shining and everything was ready for the morning. Boots were polished and livery jackets steamed. Shirts were ironed and everything hung out ready.

It was getting late now, and our little caravan was still attached to my car. So, our last evening job was to set it up and make up the beds, which we all promptly fell into and slept.

There was a buzz of activity outside, and it was only 5 am!! We dragged ourselves up and got ourselves ready. Breakfast for the horses first, of course, then breakfast for us, which consisted of bacon rolls and a good old cup of tea. Boyd arrived around 6 am; his coach had already been delivered, so Boyd, Dean and I set to polishing it and getting it ready for the horses.

Eleanor and Emma, our groom, went to muck out the horses and give them one last groom ready for the harness. Boyd oversaw everything with a scrutinising eye. He didn’t miss a thing, and his attention to detail was amazing to witness. You could see why he was a world champion. He missed nothing.

I sometimes look back and think, this was when things clicked with me. The moment that I realised that nothing, but perfection will do. And even with perfection, you must look for something more to take yourself higher. You can always better yourself, and you never stop learning. It is a humbling thought.

People started to arrive at around 8 am. Ladies in beautiful dresses with wide-brimmed hats, and gentlemen in morning suits and grey toppers. The champagne was already out, and you could feel the excitement beginning to build. Our horses now harnessed and looking like film stars were ready.

Dean and Emma, wearing full livery attire with long black jackets white breeches and long boots. Top hats, and a smile, were looking nervous, but ready. Boyd came away from his guest and signalled us that it was time to put our horses to the carriage. The four of us brought a horse each up from the stable yard and positioned them in their correct positions in front of the coach. Boyd inspected everything. We stood in silence waiting hopefully for his approval.

All we got was a nod and an approving look, but that would do, we all let out the breaths we had been holding. He stepped up onto the box seat and we handed him his reins one at a time. Dean and I then attached the horses to the coach under Boyd's watchful eye. After a few rein and strap adjustments, he was happy.

Dean and Emma helped the guests alight the coach. It’s a long way up and a ladder is attached to the coach's side to help the ladies. It's all very proper. The whole picture looked spectacular, and Boyd even smiled, which was reassuring.

They were off.

Boyd gave a nod and the grooms stood to one side. With a stern WALK ON, the whole team jumped into action. Wow is all I have to say about that!

Anyway, once they had left, Eleanor and I had to run around like lunatics getting water, Hay, feed, grooming stuff and harness cleaning stuff in the car. Then hot tail it down to Ascot where we were told to park in the royal stables and set up our stalls for the afternoon.

This was going to be a long day.

Morning came all too quickly.

Since then, our horses have been hired out at such prestigious events as Royal Ascot, Royal Windsor, The Magazine meet at Buckingham Palace, and Sandringham. They really have rubbed shoulders with the best. The Royal Logistics Corps has hired us for a number of years now, and our coaches are always brimming with dignitaries from far and wide.

Boyd actually did become a friend, after hiring our horses on many occasions to wine and dine with his friends and associates. When he decided to move to Holland to up his game in the competitive world of carriage driving, he asked us if we would be interested in taking on a little bit of extra work.

One of his sponsors and the largest independent funeral company in the country was looking for a new horse drawn service to look after them. They had 27 offices at that time, and it was going to be a huge undertaking. But I never shy away from a challenge and hard work is my middle name. So, we agreed. With Boyd's recommendation, the company didn’t need any convincing, but there was one small problem.

We didn’t have enough of anything. Horses, carriages, plumes, or drapes for that matter. Boyd stepped in again and provided us with another team of black Friesian horses and a pair of white Lipizzaner’s. He also just so happened to have two more carriages lying around, one of which was almost brand new. We arranged a deal where we could pay him back slowly over time as we just didn’t have that type of money to invest.

Staff was the next thing. Up until this point, we had been doing everything ourselves, but with this amount of work coming in, we would need help. Eleanor was now 16 years old, and she had to sink or swim. She swam and started helping drive horses at funerals. She is a natural and her gentle nature around the horses shines through and keeps any situation calm, even in the most difficult of moments.

I am very proud to say that Eleanor was recently selected out of hundreds of applicants countrywide to have a three-day bursary with the president of the coaching club. This is a very prestigious and historical gentlemen's club in high society. They uphold traditions of a bygone era. Eleanor spent her days driving horses and learning all about correctness within the driving and coaching history.

She also got the chance to see the Quicksilver, one of the last royal mail coaches to exist. For two years now, Regency Horse and Carriage Masters have been awarded Carriage Master of the Year by The Good Funeral Awards, and we have been nominated to win it again this year. This has been another defining moment in my career, and we have everything crossed that we can hold on to such a boastful title just a little bit longer.

Our Lives So Far (Part Two)

Welcome Back!

Moving on a few years, we now had a yard full of driving horses of various sizes and descriptions. A large harness room full of sets of harnesses and more than a couple of beautiful carriages for all occasions in the barn. We had caught the bug of all things carriage driving.

My partner Dean now had bookshelves brimming with old coaching books and memorabilia of a bygone era; he had totally immersed himself in the history of driving and carriage restoration.

Eleanor now had a very smart little driving pony called Stuart Little, and Dean and I were putting horses together as pairs and teams. We had been lucky enough to be gifted a beautiful pair of hackney horses and a wedding carriage by a friend who could no longer keep them due to her health. She had asked us to help her with the last few wedding commitments she had booked in her diary.

For us, this was a little bit of baptism of fire, as up to this point, driving had just been a hobby for all of us. With some trepidation, I set out to get us the right insurance, and we went for it. The wedding was a complete success, mainly down to our amazing horses who had done it all before and took everything in their stride.

In those very early days, it really was the horses teaching us. They knew exactly where to stand and what to do, they even posed for the camera. Word got around, and before we knew it, we had a steady stream of bookings for weddings and proms during the summer months.

To say we were hooked is an understatement.

Without even trying, our hobby had become a business.

One of our first many proud moments was when I received a call from some very official Olympic committee people whose names have slipped my mind. They asked us if we could provide our horses and carriage to carry two Olympic gold medallists during a carnival for them around their local town. The local Mayor also planned to join them on the day.

We dressed the carriage with the Union Jack and proudly carried our special passengers around packed, people-lined streets, with music and all the usual trappings of a carnival atmosphere. Our horses were foot-perfect, and my heart felt like it would burst out of my chest. I was so proud of our beautiful horses and our whole team. We did it, and we did it well.

Until now, none of us had formal carriage driving training, so I started investigating that. We are all very proud to say we now hold the highest commercial carriage driver qualifications you can get. The BDS level 4.

Shortly after this, and now owning our first beautiful pair of white Lipizzaner’s, we officially started Regency Horse and Carriage Masters Limited. I know it's a bit of a mouthful, but we do what it says on the tin!

Our new carriage-driving friends, some of whom already had horse-drawn businesses, were always on hand to help and guide us through. And in times of need we were there to help them with overflow work.

On one of these occasions, we had been asked if we could cover a horse-drawn funeral for them. Dean and I looked at each other with the same trepidation as when we had done our first wedding. This was new territory for us; we didn’t have the correct carriage and didn’t have the first clue about the protocol for the day.

Luckily, we had been invited to help another company do a couple of Horse Drawn Funerals as grooms, which gave us some much-needed insight into the goings-on before we had to do one ourselves. So, with borrowed equipment and a carriage, we provided our funeral service for the very first time.

I can only speak for myself when I say I was terrified!!

The weight of responsibility weighed heavily on me; this was someone's loved one we were taking on their final journey on this earth.

The family, and the funeral director trusted us to carry this person safely, and with all the dignity befitting such an occasion; even our horses felt the weight of such a responsibility; they were foot-perfect, not moving a muscle as the coffin was placed into our carriage.

The procession started at the funeral home with all the grandeur one would expect from a traditional funeral. The family had all gathered behind the hearse to take the short walk to the church. The funeral director donned his hat and cane and walked slowly to the carriage, where the coffin and flowers were already in place.

The tension was palpable; I had what felt like the weight of the world on my shoulders; I sat up high on the box seat, watching the funeral director's every move, waiting for my instruction. He stood solemnly by the side of our hearse and took a long, low bow. The hair stood up on my arms, and my mouth felt dry. He then stepped in front of the carriage and horses, turning briefly. He looked me directly in my eyes and nodded his head. No words needed it was time!

Giving a quiet command, my beautiful pair of horses stepped out behind him in a slow, steady march. The family silently followed on behind us making no sound at all. It almost felt like a shroud had been draped over the whole event, and all background noises just fell away, just the rhythmic beat of the horse's hooves.

I will never forget how I felt at that very first funeral, how honoured and privileged that I had been chosen to be there for the family and their loved ones. To witness the solemn grief of a family was so raw and humbling. But to see in that grief the beauty of a family supporting each other and giving their loved one such a beautiful, elegant final journey.

It took a few years, but the Regency name began establishing itself as a reputable business within the horse-drawn service industry. Many years later, and with a now-established horse-drawn business, I am still immensely proud of our daily work.

Even after 100’s of funerals, I still feel that same weight of responsibility every single time.

Our Lives So Far (Part One)

Hello!

My name is Lisa Wilde, and this is my daughter Eleanor.

We are here today to introduce you to Regency and tell you a bit about how I ended up being the Company Director of two businesses within the Funeral Industry whilst being a mother of 3 and negotiating many trials and tribulations!

Since the age of 3 years old, I have been horse-mad! Our family holiday always had to include a pony ride for my sister and I, which then turned into weekly riding lessons at the local riding school. My earliest memories have always included horses. Starting with my Barbie horses, which I cherished, along with the dream that I would someday have my own horse.

My parents, although both hard-working people, could not afford the luxury of a pony, so, every year on our family holiday, they would always make sure the obsession was fed. One year in Devon, it rained from start to finish, and to my disappointment, I didn’t get my pony ride. Dad promised that when we got home, he would take me to a local riding school for a ride, and much to his dismay, that was the beginning of what turned out to be a regular thing for many years!

At 15, my dream came true with my first horse, and then it all began...!

Growing up in the Countryside and having a horse-mad mother, Eleanor has always been immersed in everything rural – at the ripe old age of 1 day old, she experienced her first horse on the way home from the hospital. We decided to make a quick pit stop to check on the horses, and we took the opportunity to plonk Ellie on her first pony! From that moment on, her fate was sealed. Horses would always play a large part in her life.

Time, and a lot of hard work later, we were lucky enough to own a small holding, and over the years, Eleanor and her now two brothers have seen a large array of animals come to stay with us. I couldn’t turn away anything needing help, so we became a sanctuary for anything that needed us. This sometimes even included people. Our home became a safe space for whoever needed us.

My children thrived, and the empathy they showed with the responsibility they learnt, has, and still does, make me incredibly proud of them daily. Our true love was and still is horses. Eleanor was around 10 years old by this time, and that first pony I had plonked her on at 1 day old was now becoming a little outgrown.

Another such moment was during the fuel crisis when people couldn’t get fuel, and all the tankers were not making it to fuel stations. I forget the reason. But this was not a problem for us as we used our horses to get the children to school.

Much to Ellie's dismay, she was now nearing secondary school and found all this highly embarrassing. Someone from the news must have found out about our little trips to school and contacted me asking if they could come and ask a few questions.

Well, yes, I suppose so I said. I was unsure why they would be interested in us, but the next thing I knew, a TV crew descended on us. Two enormous vans with aerials and satellite dishes sticking out the top. We did a whole piece of the news about how we are beating the fuel crisis by using our horses for school and shopping trips.

This was true, but it was more than a little tongue-in-cheek. Poor Eleanor was so mortified she refused to be filmed, so we had to pull in two of my friend's children as stand-ins.

So, in our ultimate wisdom, we decided to teach him to pull a carriage. He took to his new task like a duck to water, and as a family, we had found an amazing new passion, one which everyone could enjoy, young and old. Our weekends now consisted of packing us all up and travelling around the countryside with like-minded friends, each taking it in turn to host our weekend drives.

We always included one, if not more, pub stops along the way. Each week, we found new byways to explore and new adventures to have. Some of our fondest memories are of those early days when the children were little.

We have had our famous five-minute moments along the way, too.

As I recall, one such occasion was a frosty cold winter afternoon. Benjamin and Oliver were very small, and none of the children were at school, so that could have been the Christmas holidays. I needed to exercise one of our now many driving ponies. But couldn’t leave the children on their own.

So, three children wrapped up like little Eskimos accompanied me on the carriage with blankets and hot water bottles. I only planned to take a little stroll around the block, which was about 15 minutes down quiet single-track country lanes.

As we strolled back towards our little farm, we saw a man with a huge, lensed film camera in the distance. He was videoing the frosted fields and the slow sunset. It was a beautiful sight, and there was a silence hanging over us, with just the quiet, muted hooves of our little pony on the track breaking the silence. We passed, and silently acknowledged each other. I drove our little merry band onward towards home, where a warm, open fire awaited us.

Later that evening, I watched Anglian News as the opening credits and theme music started. There we were on the TV. Walking along a silent frosted country lane with the sun going down behind us. The children are all wrapped up on the back with only their little faces showing under a mountain of blankets.

We had somehow ended up on the countryside views that they use to introduce the programme. The phone didn’t stop ringing for days after that. Everyone had seen us and our endearing little gang.

In honour of David's memory, his family kindly requests donations to Addenbrookes Hospital Charity.

The family are deeply saddened to announce that well-known St. Neots resident Mr Michael Priestley died on 17th March, aged 86, after a short illness. He has been described by well-wishers who knew him as “a true gent.”

The eldest of 9 children, Michael was born in Boston, Lincolnshire, attending Boston Grammar school until the age of 16. He then left school to work in telecommunications with the Post Office. He met his wife Rita at age 17 at the Gliderdrome in Boston which was, back then, a rollerskating rink. At 18 he completed 2 years of National Service with The Royal Signals. Michael and Rita married in 1956 and moved to Peterborough before finally settling in St Neots in 1960, when Michael became the town’s telephone engineer.

In 1962 he started the St. Neots School of Motoring, which had the catchy slogan “Ring 55 and Learn to Drive” (telephone numbers were only two digits back then). The business finally closed in 2002 when he retired. His patience as an instructor and witty repartee were much appreciated, and it was not uncommon for him to have taught multiple generations of the same family. His commitment to his pupils was second to none, and on one occasion in the early 1980s he even sacrificed his tie to replace the fan belt in order that his pupil could complete her driving test.

In 1963 he began a 32-year career in Road Safety, working this job during the day and giving driving lessons around it. He had many responsibilities, but he is perhaps most remembered for visiting schools and teaching children how to ride a bike safely. After working for both Huntingdon and Peterborough councils, he finally held the position of Senior Assistant Road Safety Officer for Cambridgeshire from 1990 to 1995. Outside work he was a dedicated member of the local community.

After joining St. Neots Conservative Club in 1961 he became Chairman in 1974, a position he held for 26yrs before becoming President for a number of years thereafter. His commitment earned him a very special long-service award. On top of that, he was on St. Neots Town Council during the late 70s and even completed a stint as Deputy Mayor of St. Neots.

When he died, he was an active member of the Probus Club in St. Neots. He had also been President of this organisation for a time.

His main leisure pursuit was tending to his garden alongside his wife Rita. She will miss him very much after their 65 years of marriage, as will their Son Simon, Daughter Caroline, and Grandchildren Robin, Molly, Oliver, Bertie, and Eddie.

The funeral will be at 11.30am on Friday 22nd April at Bedford Crematorium, Norse Road, Bedford, and we would be pleased to see anyone who wishes to join us. Please arrive 15 minutes before. Please no dark formal clothes as Michael wanted guests to be themselves.

Whilst flowers from the family are welcome, Michael wanted friends to donate to the Woodlands Cancer Charity at Hinchingbrooke hospital. Cheques to be made payable to NWAFTHINCHINGBROOKECHARITY, stating on reverse of the cheque – HOPE ONCOLOGY 5402, and there will be a donation box at the service. You may contact the family to make an online payment. The funeral will be live-streamed and recorded for those unable to attend.
